The City of West Hollywood presents its annual celebration
for Harvey Milk Day and kick-off for WeHo Pride, with the third annual José
Sarria Drag Pageant. The event is co-sponsored by the Imperial Court and by Los
Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath, Third District.
Harvey Milk was the first openly LGBTQ person to win
political office in California, and José Sarria was the first openly gay person
to run for office in the United States, helping pave the way for Harvey Milk’s
successful run for office 15 years later. Sarria was also a well-known drag
performer under the name the Window Norton, and founded the Imperial Court
System which is one of the oldest and largest LGBT organizations in the world.
This year’s drag competition is hosted by West Hollywood Drag Laureate Pickle,
and several drag icons will be honored. Judges include: Queen Mother Karina
Samala and Emperor Eugene Maysky of the Imperial Court, and others TBA.
In addition to the Drag Pageant, there will be a voter
registration table, milk and cookies, historical information on Milk and
Sarria, and a Harvey Milk photo opportunity.
May 22 also marks the first day of WeHo Pride! (May
22-June 30).
The WeHo Pride Arts Festival will take place
from May 23-25. More info: WeHo Pride Arts Festival
