LA Phil Creative Chair John Adams leads an All-American program, featuring his new piano concerto, After the Fall, with soloist Víkingur Ólafsson, a musician with “a magical touch” (BBC). “[A] dreamlike thrill ride,” the concerto is “a terrific addition to the composer’s catalog,” raved the San Francisco Chronicle.

Charles Ives’ poetic The Unanswered Question, his most famous work, opens the program, while Roy Harris’ Symphony No. 3 and Aaron Copland’s iconic Appalachian Spring, both expressions of an authentic “American” musical voice, bring it to a close. Born in Oklahoma and raised outside of LA, Harris vividly captures the colors and landscapes of the West in in his works. In Appalachian Spring, Copland movingly depicts a young preacher and his wife embarking on a life together in the American frontier.
