Ten years ago, Alabama Shakes transformed their hardscrabble soul and Southern rock into something lighter, more experimental, and altogether mind blowing. Taking cues from soul heroes Erykah Badu and Curtis Mayfield, as well as the scuzzy garage rock of MC5 and The Strokes, they released Sound & Color, an exploratory record on which they play space rock, psychedelic funk, and more with a decidedly Southern accent. The album was a huge success, picking up four Grammys and an Album of the Year nomination, and ending up on year-end lists by everyone from Billboard to Complex to The New York Times.
Following a seven-year hiatus, the band made their triumphant return in December 2024, surprising fans at singer Brittany Howard’s solo show in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with their first live appearance since 2018. They come to the Bowl for their first LA-area show in eight years, a decade after the release of their genre-expanding, wildly beloved masterpiece.
