Hiatus Kaiyote’s smoky, psychedelic soul and heavy funk have made them a fiercely adored live band, and a go-to sample source for Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, and other rappers looking to bring smooth grooves to their music. On their most recent album, 2024’s Love Heart Cheat Code, the three-time Grammy nominees venture deeper into the mystic world of psych-rock without abandoning the swinging, exploratory jazz-funk at their core. The Financial Times called it “expansively romantic, alluringly weird, and irrepressibly joyous,” as well as “a party soundtrack for hazy days and hot nights.”
Since forming in Denton, Texas, in 2004, the shapeshifting collective Snarky Puppy has won five Grammys performing a uniquely personal brand of music. It’s a little bit jazz, a little bit rock, with influences from R&B and gospel and the blues, all of it played with incredible precision and visceral joy; the late David Crosby called them a “big, funky, romping, muscular jazz band.” On their latest album, 2022’s Empire Central, they reconnect with their Texas roots, paying tribute to the history of Black music in Dallas. Its fresh feeling, percolating rhythms, and ear-candy synth effects won it the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album award at the 2023 Grammys.
