2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the release of Minnie Riperton’s classic album Perfect Angel. At the time, Riperton was 27 years old, a veteran of the music industry. As a teenager, she sang background on sessions with Etta James and The Dells for the legendary Chess Records, but her “brightest moment” (Pitchfork) came with the release of Perfect Angel in 1975. The album is best known for the song “Lovin’ You,” which became a No. 1 Billboard hit and showcased her five-and-a-half-octave vocal range. Years later, BBC said, “with its extended chant to Maya Rudolph, her daughter, at the end, it is still affecting now as when it was first heard.”
“Lovin’ You” became an iconic song of the 1970s. NPR said that it is “in some ways bigger than Minnie Riperton, andthat’s unfortunate because it obscures the complexity and the depth of her catalog.” Produced by Stevie Wonder and her husband Richard Rudolph, Perfect Angel’s bright, soulful blend of breezy pop, rock, and soul is a showcase for her musical vision and a perfect entry point into a brilliant career.
Now, her legacy is returning to the spotlight as an all-star gathering of soul and jazz artists reimagine classic songs from throughout her career, complete with immersive visuals from The Richard Rudolph Collection.
