Free Things to do in WeHo this Summer


Who doesn’t love free entertainment, especially on the sultry days and nights of a California summer? West Hollywood, a hotbed for creative talent and a haven for good times, definitely knows the drill. You’ll find lots of fun things to do – from live outdoor music to sweet jam sessions to sexy soirees that will cost you nothing.

Want to get around for free? No problem. Following the success of the WeHo PickUp free trolley, which runs on Santa Monica Boulevard, the Sunset Trip trolley now operates on Fridays and Saturdays from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Sunset Boulevard.

Summer Sounds Concert Series

Add a little sass to your Sundays with the City of West Hollywood’s Summer Sounds Free Outdoor Concert Series at public parks. Upcoming performances include:

July 22: Jungle Fire, which blends funk, Afro and Latin music, will perform at 5 p.m. at Plummer Park.
August 19: A new all-female swing band called The Lady Lucks will start swaying at 5 p.m. at Kings Road Park.
September 16: Vocalist Carol Bach-y-Rita will take the mic at 5 p.m. at Kings Road Park.

Sunset Jam at the Viper Room – 8852 Sunset Blvd.

The renowned Viper Room nightclub has hosted the likes of Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Lenny Kravitz, Pearl Jam and Sheryl Crow. At Sunset Jams on Monday nights, the artists’ names might not ring a bell but their musical chops will have you shouting out for more. No cover.

Upstairs at The Rainbow – 9015 Sunset Blvd.

Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio had their first date at the Rainbow Bar and Grill’s dining room (at that time, it was a restaurant called Villa Nova). In the early 1970s, the place revamped and became a magnet for rock super stars and other celebs. Extend your weekend at the upstairs bar’s free DJ night called Metal Mayhem Mondays.

Ultimate Jam Night at the Whisky – 8901 Sunset Blvd.

At this weekly Tuesday night jam session, you can listen to classic rock performed by A-listers who’ve backed world-famous rockers – from Madonna’s guitar player to David Lee Roth’s bassist to Cheap Trick’s drummer. Led by Quiet Riot’s Chuck Wright, there are rotating genres and themes, such as Ladies of the ’80s. Get into the groove!

Ready for a real insider’s tip? Come lounge poolside and savor some cutting-edge sounds at Sunset Marquis, the hotel that has hosted Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Blondie, Black Sabbath, The Killers, Chris Cornell, Green Day and more.

The Live@SunsetMarquis Concert Series is designed to find new talent and give back to the entertainment community. Art Exhibits & Galleries

If visual art’s your thing, West Hollywood does not disappoint. There are loads of cool galleries and summer is a lovely time to attend an exhibition opening. Also, admission to the Museum of Contemporary Art at the Pacific Design Center is always free.
