Fun Facts
The hotel opened its doors on May 31, 1963, as Gene Autry’s Hotel Continental, becoming the first high-rise hotel on the Sunset Strip. By the mid-60s, it became a magnet for legendary rockers, with iconic venues like The Whiskey-A-Go-Go hosting acts like The Doors. Rock legends like Jim Morrison of The Doors and Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant once called the hotel home. The Riot House nickname stuck due to the antics of rock ‘n’ roll musicians. From 1983 onwards, Little Richard, the Architect of Rock & Roll, made the third floor his home, entertaining guests with piano practice and impromptu concerts in the lobby. In 1986, Guns N’ Roses’ Axel Rose barbecued on his balcony, setting off the hotel’s smoke alarm and throwing steaks to people on the Sunset Strip when the Fire Department arrived.
