LGBTQ+
West Hollywood

The heart of LA’s gay community, WeHo is a welcoming city shaped by activism and pride.

Few places are as synonymous with LGBTQ+ culture as West Hollywood, California. A longtime haven for queer expression and activism, WeHo made history in 1984 as the first U.S. city to incorporate with a majority-gay city council. Today, that legacy lives on — from the legendary nightlife of the Rainbow District to celebrations like WeHo Pride. With more than 40% of residents identifying as LGBTQ+, inclusion is woven into every corner of West Hollywood.

In the Rainbow District and beyond, West Hollywood is bursting with LGBTQ+-friendly restaurants, neighborhood coffee shops, indulgent spas, sensational shopping and outstanding art galleries — all shaped by a community that values self-expression and belonging. Whether it’s a first-time visit, a happy return or even a wedding, discover a city that doesn’t just welcome people for who they are — it celebrates them.

The Rainbow District: 1 Mile of Magic

The beating heart of LA’s LGBTQ+ scene is the Rainbow District, a 1-mile stretch of Santa Monica Boulevard packed with more than 50 LGBTQ+-owned restaurants, bars and shops. Day or night, the energy is unmistakable, with patios buzzing and dance floors full at iconic spots like The Abbey, Micky’s and Revolver.

West Hollywood also honors its past through meaningful public spaces like STORIES: The AIDS Monument. Located in West Hollywood Park, the monument is a powerful tribute to those lost to the AIDS epidemic, a space for reflection and a reminder of the community’s resilience. Just a few steps away is ONE Gallery, showcasing rotating exhibitions of LGBTQ+ art, history and culture.

Iconic Events

For decades, Santa Monica Boulevard has been the stage for some of the national’s most influential Pride celebrations, which continues today with WeHo Pride. Combining concerts, celebrity performances, a community arts festival and, of course, a spectacular parade, WeHo Pride is a joyous citywide expression of visibility, creativity and acceptance.

That’s not the only LGBTQ+-friendly celebration on the annual event calendar. Each October, the West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval transforms Santa Monica Boulevard into one of the largest Halloween street parties in the world, where elaborate costumes, live entertainment and uninhibited self-expression take center stage.

Fabulous Neighborhoods to Explore

At just 1.9 square miles, everything in West Hollywood is close by and easy to explore. Spend a day shopping and people-watching in the Design District, home to more than 300 galleries, fashion boutiques, cutting-edge design stores and showrooms along walkable Robertson Boulevard and Melrose Avenue.

Explore Santa Monica Boulevard — WeHo’s stretch of Route 66 — beyond the Rainbow District to get your kicks at trendy fitness clubs, classic Los Angeles institutions like the Formosa Cafe, and lively hangouts from Delilah to Hamburger Mary’s. And no visit to West Hollywood is complete without time on the legendary Sunset Strip. From a day of shopping and lunching at Sunset Plaza to nights spent frolicking at iconic music venues, glamorous rooftop bars and high-energy nightclubs, the Strip is where rock ’n’ roll history lives and anything goes.

LGBTQ+-Friendly Accommodations

It’s no exaggeration to say that every West Hollywood hotel is an LGBTQ+-friendly hotel. For a boutique stay with serious style (not to mention disco pickleball), Kimpton La Peer places you steps from Rainbow District nightlife. Nearby, Petit Ermitage is an artsy escape with ornate rooms and a lush rooftop garden and pool, while Chamberlain West Hollywood pairs sleek, apartment-style suites with a quieter setting that’s still close to all the action.

On the Sunset Strip, Hotel Ziggy dazzles with its colorful, music-driven atmosphere and live entertainment, while The West Hollywood EDITION offers a design-forward stay and one of LA’s most luxurious spas. Other standout hotels along The Strip include Andaz West Hollywood, known for its trendy, social vibe; 1 Hotel West Hollywood, an urban oasis of wellness and sustainability; The Sun Rose West Hollywood, with its playful aesthetic and Wolfgang Puck restaurants; and The London West Hollywood at Beverly Hills, offering afternoon high tea and Anglophile charm.
